Why BART may start building homes in its parking lots
Re: “Median price tag for a Bay Area home hits a record-shattering $935,000” (Mercurynews.com, June 22):
The average home price in Santa Clara County is now $1.4 million. To keep it from skyrocketing even further, I’m supporting AB 2923 which would empower BART to build homes on its land.
BART is the single largest owner of priority development sites in the region, and today many of those sites are underutilized as surface parking lots. Allowing housing on those sites will create a virtuous cycle of homes near good jobs, less displacement, increased transit ridership, great construction jobs without sprawl and improved BART fiscal health without fare hikes.
BART represents a huge public investment. If Sen. Jim Beall and the Senate Transportation and Housing Committee advance AB 2923, it will help us make the most of it by allowing some urgently needed homes nearby.
